A RARE and talented man died this week and this city is the poorer for his passing.
Star columnist, author, family man Sheffield United and Eagles fan Peter Harvey died yesterday morning at the age of 73.

There are tributes to him elsewhere in this paper from those who knew him much better than I did but I want to have my two penn'orth anyway.

Peter was coming towards the end of his full-time working life – spent entirely on the staff of Sheffield Newspapers– when I started here and already a legend in the newspaper's history.

His whimsical, understated style was always compelling, his columns as warm as the mid afternoon tea-break you never want to end.

Above all that though he was a nice bloke without a trace of ego or edge, always quick to encourage and acknowledge the work of others.

Rest in peace Peter, and thanks for everything.
