Retail interiors specialist Birley Manufacturing’s bid to stop sending waste material to landfill sites is helping a Barnsley school boost the involvement of 14- to 16-year-olds.

Sheffield-based Birley has been giving local schools scrap MDF, chipboard and plywood offcuts, which they can then use for general maintenance or art and design and technology projects.

At Springwell School in Barnsley pupils, pictured, have been using the material to fit out a scrapped doubledecker bus.

When finished, the bus will provide a Big Brother style Diary Room on the upper floor and downstairs, the bus will be provide a chill-out area with comfy seating and audio visual equipment.
