Rebecca Wills, aged 17, was forced to pay the full fare – more than three-and-a-half times the student rate – after her application was binned without her knowledge.

And when her dad Stuart rang the call centre and was told the reason, he had to persuade the worker his company had got it wrong.

Stuart, of Wharncliffe Avenue, Wharncliffe Side, said: “I explained there was obviously a fault with their system and he said he had to check with his superviser before finally agreeing with me.

“Rebecca’s pal Chloe had to do the same thing, so now I’m wondering how many other students have been denied a pass because, supposedly, Sheffield isn’t in South Yorkshire. The call centre’s in Northamptonshire, but you’d think they would at least check the geography of the area they are dealing with.”

Rebecca studies animal management at Sheffield City College and travels in five times a week. Student rate is 50p one way, but she’s had to buy a £3.70 dayrider for more than three weeks.

She said: “It’s cost me a lot of money, especially since I haven’t been receiving EMA because there’s a backlog.

“I would have thought someone at the call centre would have flagged it up.

“If dad hadn’t chased it up who knows how long I would have waited.”

REBECCA has been sent an interim student pass while she waits for her real one to arrive.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive said a non-existent postcode was input and insisted it was not a case of anyone suggesting Sheffield is not in South Yorkshire.

He said: “This year has seen a larger response and since the end of August we’ve received over 16,000 applications, most of which have been dealt with without issue. Queries are dealt with by our Contact Centre on 01709 515151.

“Staff give advice to over 500,000 people each year and they are well versed on the geography of the area so there should have been no need for the customer to contact the Novacroft production centre direct.”
