Weekly bin cash fund shunned

COUNCILS are shunning a £250 million Government fund to encourage them to switch back from fortnightly rubbish collections to weekly bin rounds, according to a survey.

Some 26 or 59 councils asked said they would not be applying or were unlikely to do so.

Sheffield Council is introducing fortnightly bin collections and says it has not applied to the fund because no decisions will be made on which councils will be successful until the autumn - too late to plan its budget.

Sheffield also declined because they would have had to agree to protect weekly collections for five years.
