But if you want a touch of quality, which eggs are worth the money?

Sainsbury’s, the Cooperative and Marks and Spencer sent us their own best-value luxury eggs to try.

We valiantly tucked in on your behalf...

Best luxury adult egg at a value price: Co-operative Truly Irresistible Fairtrade Milk Chocolate & Butterscotch Half Egg with Mini Eggs, £10, 275g.

Sainsbury's: A range to choose from including our runner-up

Sainsbury's: A range to choose from including our runner-up

A cracker of an egg. It recently beat “posh” eggs up to £55 from Harrods, Godiva, Hotel Chocolat, Waitrose and Green & Black and we could see why. Half a thick, quality egg (34 per cent cocoa solids) embedded with crunchy butterscotch contained three eggs studded with caramelised hazelnuts, brownie chunks or chopped cherry. Innovative and delicious.

Runner-up: Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Fairtrade milk chocolate butterfly egg, £6, 220g:

Simple egg embossed with a white chocolate butterfly. Nothing to write home about, appearance-wise. But a lovely creamy richness with a good, lingering chocolate taste (30 per cent cocoa solid).

Third: Marks and Spencer The Collection White Chocolate Egg with strawberries and white chocolate buttons, £9.99 for 310g.

The heaviest egg, it should have been the best value. It looked stylish, but disappointingly the only strawberries and buttons are what are stuck on the front of an empty egg. “All fur coat and no knickers” said one tester. Plus its sturdy box seemed rather wasteful.

Taste: 2 (but then that’s white chocolate for you) Looks: 4 Value: 2 Total: 8.

Fourth: Marks & Spencer milk and hazelnut egg with white chocolate and caramelised hazelnuts, £5.99 for 150g

A visually attractive egg and we liked the flavoured bits on the top. A lot. (35 per cent cocoa solids).

Best Value Children’s luxury egg: Sainsbury’s Egg & Spoon Race, £3 for 68g.

Not much chocolate and very sweet, but four chocolate eggs, two plastic spoons and a winner’s rosette in a bag got our thumbs up for imagination.
