A surge in the number of rogue traders targeting Sheffield households has prompted a fresh warning from officials.

Trading Standards officers are urging people to report doorstep cowboys offering services on a cash-in-hand basis.

Concerns are growing following a spate of complaints where vulnerable residents were lured into agreeing to unnecessary and poor quality work.

Sheffield Council is worried recent bad weather could exacerbate the problem, as rogue traders seize the opportunity to offer roof repairs, driveway clearing and gardening services.

Coun Jack Scott, cabinet member for environment, said: “We want to get the message out there to Sheffield residents about these unscrupulous traders.

“We know they prey especially on the elderly and vulnerable within our communities, demanding payment in cash straight away.

“We would like to ask the public, if you are concerned about this type of trader in your area, approaching yourself, neighbours or family members, then please report your concerns as soon as possible.

“It helps us build a detailed picture of rogue practices and those involved, and we can then intervene on behalf of the consumer.”

Reporting incidents can save residents from footing the bill for shoddy work.

Some incidents have seen Trading Standards officers intervene to challenge legality of work – and prevent customers paying out thousands of pounds.
