A decades-old recipe that was handed down through the Sutherland family is enjoying a new lease of life thanks to the creator’s grandson and NatWest.

Mary Sutherland started small-scale production of potted beef in 1920, which became renowned for its nutritional value and the fact it kept moist in miners’ and steelworkers’ sandwiches.

Sutherland’s Spreads is now part of food giant Greencore, but Mary’s grandson, Alistair, has revived her creation and set up a new company called Original Recipes in Chesterfield.

Mr Sutherland worked closely with Sharon Naisbett, from the NatWest in Bakewell, with whom he is pictured, to secure a £120,000 loan to launch the firm.
