The man who was instrumental in delivering the Tour de France in Yorkshire has been announced as the guest speaker for this year’s Sheffield City Region Business Awards.
Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, spearheaded the winning bid to bring Le Grand Départ to the county last year, which boosted the region’s economy by an estimated £130 million.
The passionate Yorkshireman is due to explain how he helped to galvanise the public and private sectors to work together to deliver the world’s most high-profile cycle race at the third annual City Region awards on July 2 at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.
The event takes the winners of the business awards run by the four chambers in Sheffield City Region and the Derbyshire Times newspaper. They then go head-to-head to reveal who shall be ‘first among winners’.
Guests are invited to arrive for a champagne reception from 6.45pm before host, comedian Kevin Connelly, takes to the stage at just after 7.30pm. James Mitchinson, editor of The Star, is due to make a welcome speech and Mr Verity is on stage from about 9.45pm.
