The number of people employed by the Sheffield City Region’s Top 100 companies has gone up by 6,970 during the last year.

The region’s biggest employers remain the same, with Sheffield-based supplier of insulating materials and specialist building products SIG retaining its place as the biggest employer despite also shedding more jobs than any other the Top 100 company during the last year.

Sheffield-based supplier of insulating materials and specialist building products SIG has retained its place as the biggest employer despite also shedding more than 400 jobs.

Newcomers Nicholas Associates and Hamsard 3191 have gone straight in to the listing of the largest employers, displacing Rubicon Partners Industries and Rotherham’s leading profit-maker, AES Engineering.

Rubicon specialises in acquiring manufacturing and distribution businesses and appears to employ 856 fewer people than last year – however, that could be the result of disposals, rather than redundancies.

Changes in the law requiring agency workers to be included in the employee numbers will have an impact on total figures that could give a misleading appearance.
