Faster rail services between Sheffield and London are just 12 weeks away – when journey times will be reduced to two hours.

Improvements will be launched from December after the completion of a £70 million project to upgrade tracks on the Midland Main Line.

Speeds on some sections of the route are being increased to £125mph following works by Network Rail.

Fastest journeys between the two cities is currently two hours and seven minutes.

David Horne, managing director for East Midlands Trains, said: “We’ve been working on a significant improvement scheme to deliver faster journey times from some of the key cities on our network.

“Almost £70 million is being spent to enable our trains to run at speeds of up to 125mph on certain sections of our route, which will enable passengers in Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham to benefit from faster journeys to London.

“This is a hugely exciting scheme that will deliver benefits for the local economy and allow us to deliver a much improved service for our customers.”

Mr Horne added: “Our fastest train from Sheffield to London will reduce to just two hours.”

The change is the second cut in journey time since East Midlands Trains took over the line in 2007 - when most trips from Sheffield to London took two hours and 20 minutes.

East Midlands Trains said full details of the improved timetable, which begins from December 8, will be available in November.

Sheffield Council chief executive John Mothersole said: “We have consistently seen improvements in the journey times to London in recent years – which shows Sheffield is a well-connected city and will hopefully attract more investment.”
