Third of South Yorkshire workforce fail to take full holiday entitlement due to workload

A third of South Yorkshire workers did not take all of their annual leave allowance last year because their workload was too heavy, a new survey has revealed.

Research by YouGov also showed four per cent of staff who took part in the poll were worried what their boss would think if they took days off.

The findings were uncovered in a project commissioned by the information services company, Wolters Kluwer, to look into attitudes towards time off in the workplace.

Mike Allen, managing director at Wolters Kluwer’s UK HR solutions division, Croner, said: “This is a real cause for concern for employers and demonstrates that many UK workers feel, for a variety of reasons that they can’t take time off.

“However, the problem with not taking time off is that it leads to absence through sickness which is why the Working Time Directive was introduced in the first place.”

The survey also revealed short-term absence is a continuing problem for UK businesses, with 49 per cent of workers saying they had taken genuine sickness absence in the last year and five per cent admitting pulling a ‘sickie’.

In addition, 16 per cent of younger workers, aged 18 to 24, admitted to pretending they were sick to take time off work.
