CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a supermarket in Mexborough can go ahead after the final obstacle was removed.
Rotherham Council planning board approved the plans for a site next to the town’s railway station, voting it through by seven to two.
Doncaster Council’s planning committee had already given its approval to the scheme, which would be built on land straddling the border between the two neighbouring boroughs.
Campaigners from the group Save Mexborough High Street had been opposing the scheme because they are concerned the superstore will lead to the loss of more jobs in Mexborough town centre than it creates. It is claimed the store will create 250 jobs when it opens, as well as jobs in its construction beforehand.
