Rotherham town centre stores are set to open on Sundays in the run-up to Christmas - although proposals for a late night in the week have been abandoned.
The council is proposing Sunday opening on December 1, 8, 15 and 22.
Officials say ‘a good number of national retailers in the town centre including WH Smiths and Wilkinson, and an encouraging number of independent retailers’ are interested in the plans.
But the council added: “Due to a likely lack of support for Thursday late night opening, other than Christmas lights switch-on night on November 14, late night Thursday shopping will not be promoted.”
The council has now send a newsletter to businesses in the town urging them to get in touch if they are planning to join stores opening on Sundays.
A list of participating stores will be included on promotions ahead of the Sunday opening and on the council’s website to attract shoppers to the town.
