Top companies appear to be doing better in Chesterfield than any other part of the region, according to the latest Star Business/Barber Harrison & Platt Top 100 listings.
All but one of the 19 Chesterfield companies that make it into this year’s listing are making profits and two are among the 15 most profitable companies across the Sheffield region.
Wingerworth-based solid fuel specialist CPL Industries retains its top spot for the fourth year running, with profit slightly down at £12.2 million from £12.3 million last year.
The group, was formed by the merger of Charringtons and British Fuels, two of the UK’s longest established and best known fuel companies, and supplies a comprehensive range of coal and smokeless fuels to households, commercial outlets and industrial customers.
It also includes Logs2u, which delivers of long burning hardwood logs and bags of kindling to people with open fires, multi-fuel stoves, heaters and cookers and Creative Garden Ideas, which started out specialising in home delivery of large items that wouldn’t fit easily in the boot of the car and now supplies a wide range of garden related products.
United Kenning, part of Germany’s largest car rental company, Sixt, has almost trebled profits to £7.5 million to regain the second place in the rankings of Chesterfield’s most profitable companies, which it last held in 2009.
Newcomer Mallinckrodt Medical Holdings (UK) completes the top three, whilst Bridgstock has risen two places up the table after almost trebling pre-tax profits to £3.5 million.
However, National Floorcoverings has slipped three places, despite increasing profits from £2.3 million to £2.9 million.
The group, founded in 1873 and owned by the Pass family, includes Heckmondwike FB, Paragon, Play-Rite and Mat.Works, which make products ranging from fibre bonded carpets for the education market to tufted carpets and tiles for commercial applications and even sports surfaces.
National Floorcoverings also includes four associated companies, Granfix, Granwood, Granwax and Geofabrics.
Avanti GAS is the second newcomer to the listing of Chesterfield’s most profitable companies.
AvantiGas is part of the UGI group, a US-based global a distributor and marketer of energy products and services including propane, butane, natural gas and electricity.
Avanti GAS was launched in 2011 and operates as a bulk provider of Liquid Petroleum Gas to homes, businesses and for fuelling vehicles the UK.
