Speed was on the agenda when students and pupils visited the Advanced Manufacturing Park as part of the Global Manufacturing Festival: Sheffield.

The event was organised by the Yorkshire Association of Business Angels and enabled students from Sheffield Hallam and Sheffield universities to demonstrate how their were getting on with this year’s international Formula Student competition to design a single seater racing car.

Teams of undergraduates studying mechanical engineering, automotive design technology and business are designing and building the cars in their spare time, with the aim of testing in June, before racing against students from around the world at Silverstone in mid July. Both universities are looking for sponsors for their students’ cars and teams.

Also on show were the efforts of pupils from local schools who are taking part in the F1 in Schools initiative to design the fastest compressed air powered mini dragster.
