COUNCIL bosses have secured sole ownership of four key locations in Barnsley town centre.
The Metropolitan Centre, Mayday Green, Carpet World and former CEAG building now belong exclusively to Barnsley Council, after the assets of defunct regional development agency Yorkshire Forward were transferred to its homes and communities agency.
The council has lauded the acquisition as a step forward for the £125m Marketplace Barnsley project.
Coun Linda Burgess, cabinet spokeswoman for development, environment and culture, said: “We have always said that a state-of-the-art 21st century market is the cornerstone project of our vision.
“We have high profile names signed up to the project already, and our development partner is in advanced negotiations with a number of other retailers and having an ongoing positive talks with market traders. Piece by piece, all the parts of the jigsaw are falling into place, however, there are still many milestones yet to be achieved before delivery can commence on site.”
