A union leader says Tata Steel UK could become involved in a nationwide dispute if staff in Middlesborough are made to work for another organisation.

Staff on Teesside have voted to take industrial action to remain employed by Tata, and not the Materials Processing Institute set by by Tata.

Unite national officer Paul Reuter called on Tata Steel, which has a speciality steels site in Stocksbridge, to have more negotiations and said the dispute could spread across its UK sites as staff attracted support from steel workers showing solidarity.

He added: “Our members have a strong wish to remain employed by Tata Steel UK, not by an arms’ length organisation.”
