A PLAQUE commemorating the centenary of the discovery of stainless steel by Harry Brearley has been unveiled – in a Tesco Superstore.

The store on Savile Street was chosen because it is close to where Harry Brearley was born and close to the Brown Firth Research Laboratories, where Brearley was working when he made the discovery in 1913.

The plaque has been donated by the Rotary Clubs of Sheffield and was unveiled by the Master Cutler, Neil MacDonald, who said: “One hundred years on from this world-changing discovery Sheffield continues to be a major international player in advanced and innovative manufacturing.”
