Call them Sheffield’s very own Time Team if you like - and you wouldn’t wrong.
Phil Harding, a veteran of the Channel Four programme fronted by Tony Robinson, is a founder member of Wessex Archaeology, a non-profit organisation which is one of the biggest archaeological practices in the country.
He’s the one with the battered hat, often in shorts and with an expertise in flint knapping. But he’s not the only one on the telly.
Sometimes the people beavering away in the background are WA staff, according to Andrew Nolan of the Sheffield office.
He said: “Phil is integral to Time Team but our staff are there too, on and off camera. Digging the trenches or writing the final report to be published.
“Sometimes we preserve a site in situ and leave it for future generations.
“Or we preserve it ‘by record’ and produce a detailed document explaining what we have done.”
