A trainee teacher’s lucky streak on her first visit to the dogs has netted her £1,000 towards a ticket to see her brother in Australia.

Stacey Preston, of Wadsley Bridge, scooped a £1,000 jackpot after spending £1 on a raffle ticket for the Owlerton Greyhound Owners Association’s Open the Box competition.

She won £30 in the raffle and was then given a choice of keeping her winnings or trying to select - from a bag of 10 - the correct key which would win her the £1,000 jackpot.

The 24-year-old said: “My mum was visiting for the weekend and we made an impromptu decision to have a night at Owlerton.

“I was on a bit of a lucky streak as I had already won on three previous races, so I decided to go for the £1,000 jackpot as it felt like it was my lucky night.

“I couldn’t believe it when I realised I had picked the right key. The money will now pay for me to visit my brother who lives in Perth, Australia. It feels like this was all meant to be.”

John Gilburn of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium said: “It’s fantastic that Stacey won that amount on her first ever visit to the stadium – maybe beginner’s luck does exist after all.”
