Sheffield Chamber has kicked off its charity sponsorship 2014 in sparkling style with a £3,000 donation from the raffle of a diamond at the Sheffield Business Awards.
Sheffield Alcohol Support Service will receive the cash while the gem, valued at £1,500, was won by George Forsyth, general manager of Napoleons Casino at Owlerton.
Winning the title offers charities the chance to raise their profile and fundraise at chamber events.
The announcement was made at the awards ceremony at Ponds Forge sports centre last month.
Charity chief executive Josie Soutar said: “We were genuinely shocked to win and had to be prompted to go up on stage. We find it difficult to raise money because sometimes we come across as telling people not to have a good time. This is a great morale boost for staff.”
SASS, based on Abbeydale Road, employs 34 and has 54 volunteers, all in recovery. It helps 500 people a year.
It was chosen from a shortlist of five.
Chamber head of business development Amanda Pilgrim said: “We look forward to establishing a productive and valuable working relationship with SASS throughout 2014.”
The chamber helped raise more than £4,000 for Sheffield Young Carers in 2013.
Diamond winner George Forsyth said: “I watch people win and lose every night and I’m no different from any other player – it’s always sweet to win. It was a great prize. As would be expected I have given it to my lovely wife. However, I think my daughter has her eye on it.”
