Protesters fighting cuts to travel passes for older people have handed over the results of their consultation to transport bosses.

The Freedom Riders, led by Barnsley Retirees’ Action Group, have been railing against cuts to concessions after South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive removed free travel for those aged over 65.

The group carried out surveys, asking members of the public in Barnsley whether free train travel for the elderly should be restored, claiming they are ‘unhappy’ with the consultation carried out by SYPTE.

Tony Nuttall, of BRAG, said an ‘overwhelming’ number of people wanted it reinstated, with the majority wanting free travel for both South and West Yorkshire.

Protesters marched from Sheffield Town Hall to the SYPTE offices on Broad Street West where they handed over their consultation results.

Tony added: “We got a good reception in Sheffield. People were clapping us and one or two people joined in.”

The Freedom Riders will be at SYPTE’s transport committee meeting on Monday in Barnsley.
