Workers at Sheffield Forgemasters have poured 600 tonnes of molten steel into a vast subterranean mould to create one of the largest castings ever made.
The ultra-large component required multiple ladles of steel at 1,000C poured continuously. It is the first of 11 being supplied to German company SMS Meer as part of a £12 million contract.
The job will keep all 800 staff busy, according to Dr Steve Price, managing director of sales.
He added: “The process is highly complex with precise timescales for each element of the pour – from melting the steel, transporting such large volumes of molten steel across the site and scheduling the continuous pour.”
