A LANDSCAPE gardener from Doncaster is hoping to represent his country in an international competition.

Simon Abbott, aged 22, from Harpenden Drive, Dunscroft, is taking part in a four- day selection competition which will be held at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College next week.

He hopes to secure a place in Team UK for WorldSkills London 2011.

In a team of two, Simon will build a garden from scratch over four days.

WorldSkills London 2011, which takes place at ExCeL from October 5 to 8, will be the world’s largest international skills competition with young people from across the globe competing to be the best in their chosen skill.

He said: “As part of Squad UK, I have been training really hard to improve my landscape gardening skills.

“I have already seen the benefits of this in my job.”

If selected for Team UK, Simon will join a team of 18-24-year-olds at WorldSkills in October.

Team UK will be aiming to win gold, silver or bronze awards in 35 skills, ranging from robotics and electrical installation to cooking, hairdressing and landscape gardening.
