WORK is due to begin on the replacement of escalators at the Crystal Peaks shopping mall.
The £170,000 project, which begins on September 7, will see the 25-year-old escalators that link the main shopping mall with Sainsbury’s supermarket replaced by the latest energy efficient models.
The project is expected to take three weeks. There will be extra staff on site, both to redirect visitors and to help with heavy shopping, wheelchairs and pushchairs.
“The work will mainly be carried out when the centre is closed,” said manager Lee Greenwood. “Our escalators are a quarter of a century old and have served us well but we decided to replace them now rather than waiting for things to start to go wrong.
“The new ones should be running by September 28.”
