Household waste recycling centres were forced to shut suddenly in Sheffield today after staff walked out.

A resident said he turned up at the Deepcar centre only to find it had closed minutes before.

He added: “There must have been 20 other cars that turned up and had to pull away.

“What concerns me is Sheffield Council is going to have more fly-tipping and then council tax will go up to pay for it.”

The other sites at Blackstock Road, Gleadless, and Douglas Road, Longley, were also shut.

Sheffield Council contractor Veolia, which sub-contracts the sites to The Green Company to run, said it was due to ‘unforseen circumstances’ .

Staff have been involved in a dispute with The Green Company over conditions and pay, striking this month.
