Weddle Landscape Design, whose principal, Mike Browell, is visiting professor of landscape architecture at the China University of Mining and Technology, will now develop the design which aims to create a distinctive gateway to the city.

Mike Browell said, “It is always very satisfying to win a design competition, especially an international one.

“We have been working in China since 2008 and this is our 21st project. In the Ningbo Airport scheme, Weddles are particularly proud to be able to express striking design using cutting edge horticultural technology, one of our specialities.”

Judges were particularly impressed by modern green wall techniques specified by Weddles to create enclosing ‘green waves’ around the new airport.

The design is intended to echo Ningbo’s name, which, in English, means City of the Peaceful Waves.

Ningbo is on the coast south of Shanghai, has the best deep water harbour in China and once played an important role as a Silk Road port.
