Sheffield councillors were fully in favour of the Watkins Jones Group’s plan to build on vacant land in Rockingham Street, next to its existing 280-bed Rockingham House.

Planning permission was granted despite objections from Sheffield University, which claimed the plans did not take into account the site’s closeness to research and teaching buildings, which can create noise, disturbance and fumes.

Simon Tucker, from agent DLP Planning, told councillors at Tuesday’s planning committee meeting that surveys taken during term-time showed standard acoustic measures such as double glazing would block out any noise from neighbouring buildings.

Committee member Coun Andrew Sangar said: “This is a site that has remained vacant for a number of years.

“This is the sort of development we want on it.”
