Winners of a Sheffield business challenge impressed judges with a device which could save the NHS millions of pounds in missed appointments.

AppointmentDr came out on top at the Startup Weekend Sheffield, which saw teams brainstorming business ideas over an intense 54 hour period.

The winners now go forward to a Global Startup Battle with their proposal for a plugin which aims to make it quick and easy for patients to cancel and change appointments via text, and which is compatible with all NHS appointment systems.

The design was based on conversations with members of the public and medical professionals who reported that they needed something quick, easy, responsive and compatible to help reduce the 12,000,000 missed NHS appointments every year.

AppointmentDr impressed the judges with their excellent customer research, energy and potential to make a real difference in society.

Elena Rodriguez-Falcon, Sheffield University professor of engineering and enterprise, said during the event: “As a judge I’m looking for a team who show that they have gone through the process together, have come up with a viable proposition and are willing to go all the way.”
AppointmentDr’s victory won the team places on the University of Sheffield Enterprise’s Pre-start Programme to help them develop their idea further into a startup business.

In second place was Tailor Made who pitched a body scanning app which records your measurements to ensure online clothing purchases will fit.

Third place went to Geneticode, whose app based coding game teaches computer programming to the younger generation.
