Sheffield’s Women of Steel statue has taken another significant step closer to becoming a reality following a bumper donation to the appeal.

A cheque for £21,292 was presented to the Women of Steel Appeal by organisers of the Cue Ball charity dinner which was raised during the annual event at the city’s Mercure St Paul’s Hotel.

The black-tie dinner, which marks the start of the World Snooker Championship each year, was attended by snooker legends, celebrities, civic dignitaries and members of the business community.

The cheque takes the total funds raised for the statue so far, to £136,000 - just £14,000 short of the £150,000 total needed.

Further fundraising events for the appeal will take place over the next few months, finishing with a folk concert in Sheffield Cathedral on November 26, when it is hoped the target will be achieved.
