Barnsley’s third most profitable SME, contract repackager Yorkshire Repak, tops the rankings of city region employers, ahead of North Derbyshire-based care home operator MPS Care.
MPS operates 14 care homes, in an area that spans Northern Ireland, Cumbria, the North East and Wales as well as closer to home in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
Two Matlock-based clothing firms – John Smedley and David Nieper – are among the leading SME employers in the City Region.
While John Smedley specialises in hand-crafted men’s and women’s knitwear, sold by top retailers and online, David Nieper’s range includes nightclothes and lingerie as well as knitwear, casual clothing and accessories, which are sold direct to customers online.
Former Barnsley table topper, discount store group The Company Shop is also high in the job creation stakes.
Tenth-placed Tinsley Bridge is Sheffield’s leading SME employer.
The Shepcote Lane company specialises in making advanced suspension components for commercial and military vehicles and giant machine knives, and provides services that include hi-tech design, project management, fabrication, installation and commissioning and high performance coating systems.
Meanwhile, Matlock-based theme park operator Gulliver’s World comes in at 15th. In addition to Matlock, Gulliver’s has theme parks in Warrington and Milton Keynes, designed for children from two years old to 13.
