After a brief blaze of glory, fuelled by legal action, Sheffield-based Elmsdale Estates has lost its place as the city’s most profitable SME and vanished from the Top 100 SMEs table.
The developer had its figures boosted last year by an out of court settlement of a legal claim, which was worth £3 million in damages and interest.
Recycling specialist Kuusakoski moves into first place, with profits up £160,000.
Faraday Road-based Kuusakoski Ltd is the UK arm of Scandinavia’s leading industrial recycling company, and scrap metal processor, Kuusakoski Inc, which operates more than 100 locations worldwide, including the USA, China and Taiwan, as well as Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland Sweden, Denmark and the UK.
Newcomer Benchmark Holdings has gone straight in to second place in the rankings of Sheffield’s most profitable SMEs.
The international investment group, which was established in 1999, has operations in seven countries and has developed successful businesses across the food chain.
Two months ago, the company acquired the Novartis Animal Health vaccine manufacturing plant in Braintree and unveiled plans to develop specialist small to medium scale products for developing world markets.
Subsidiaries also include the Fish Vet Group, which works with fish farms, fisheries, regulatory authorities, academics, pharmaceutical and feed companies across Europe, Asia and the Americas to improve fish welfare and biosecurity.
Pricecheck Toiletries, the UK’s leading Health & Beauty clearance wholesaler, retains its third place, while Abbey Stainless Steels, which was placed fourth in last year’s Sheffield table, has outgrown the Top 100 SMEs listing and also changed its name to Abbey Forged Products.
Taking its place is Drishaun Holdings, the parent group of Abtech, the Sanderson Street company which specialises in designing, manufacturing and supplying enclosures and has factories and offices in the USA, Germany, Netherlands and Singapore as well as a network of agents covering 40 countries worldwide.
Abtech makes enclosures from stainless and mild steel, glass reinforced polyester, aluminium, polycarbonate and ABS for a wide range of applications, including hazardous areas
Placed fifth in the Sheffield table is TGW (Holdings), better known as Wolstenholme Machine Knives.
The company gained a Top 100 SMEs listing last year, following the creation of the group to bring subsidiaries of the family-owned business together, and has secured its position as Sheffield’s fifth most profitable SME after increasing profits from £726,000 to £2.04 million.
The family-owned business, which was founded 104 years ago, makes knives for the food processing, packaging, printing, paper, foil and film processing sectors in Sheffield and also has a North American sales and marketing operation in the US city of Cincinnati.
Among the city’s most profitable SMEs for the first time is President Engineering Group, the specialist valve manufacturer formed by a management buyout two years ago.
President comprises three valve businesses – Bestobell Valves, Bestobell LNG and Conflow.
Bestobell Valves is one of the world’s leading suppliers of cryogenic valves to the industrial gas and downstream liquid natural gas industries, while Bestobell LNG was set up in 2004 to meet the rapidly increasing demand for fire-safe cryogenic valves for use in the liquid natural gas industry, including valves for LNG cargo carriers, liquefaction plants and storage and re-gasification terminals.
Conflow supplies a range of water control and monitoring systems for use in mines, including equipment used in dust suppression systems on coal cutting equipment and underground conveyors, hydrants, flow meters and sensors.
