Recession bites for construction industry

Have your say

Three out of the Sheffield City Region’s 10 biggest manufacturing employers notched up losses according to the latest Star Business/Sheffield University Management School Top 50 listing.

All three – Polypipe, Jeld-Wen and SIG – supply into the construction sector, which has been hit hard by the recession.

However, the region’s biggest metals manufacturers fared better, with only Koyo Bearings (Europe) - suffering losses and three - AES Engineering, Danaher UK Industries and Outokumpu Stainless - recording profits in excess of £10 million. It needs to be borne in mind, although all the companies in the Top 50 listing have registered offices in the region, that does not necessarily mean that all their employees are based locally.
