Leading law firm DLA Piper has retained its number one position for advising on mergers and acquisitions.

According to the Mergermarket M&A league tables, the firm had the highest volume of transactions in 2010.

DLA Piper’s Sheffield office completed more than 30 deals worth approximately £185 million in the past year.

Major deals handled by the firm’s Yorkshire offices included the highly complex £63 million restructuring and refinancing of the Sheffield-based Dyson Group, the firm’s first acquisition for new Indian conglomerate client TVS Group and a strategic acquisition for household name Mothercare.

Sheffield office head of corporate law, Richard May, said: “Mid-market M&A is the cornerstone of our corporate practice in South Yorkshire. Our experience in that market in 2010 mirrored the national and European picture and was reflected in our number one position.

“Particularly in the second half of the year, the team here in Sheffield were very busy on a good cross-section of local, national and international transactions, which is very encouraging.”
