Business Secretary Vince Cable is being urged to block plans to build on the site of the former Sheffield Airport.
The call comes from the Federation of Small Businesses, which has written to Dr Cable calling on him to halt development of the site and saying it wants further consideration to be given to reopening the airport for commercial aviation.
Gordon Millward, FSB regional chairman, said: “The former Sheffield City Airport is about to be redeveloped.
“Once this happens, all hope of a facility in Sheffield for reaching the major European centres will be lost.
“We believe, far from a lesser need for an airport in Sheffield, the need is greater now than when it opened.
“Its supposed replacement, Robin Hood Airport, has focused solely on international leisure tourism and delivers none of the benefits so vital to the business community.”
Developers of Sheffield Business Park have planning permission to build on the site. They say it would not be possible to reopen the airport and construction will start as soon as the first deal is signed with a potential occupier.
