Passengers rise on trains

EAST Midlands Trains has revealed strong passenger growth over the last year as people switched from car to rail due to rocketing fuel prices.

Parent company Stagecoach has reported travellers using the Sheffield to London operator’s services, and those of sister company South West Trains, increased by six per cent.

Managing director Tim Shoveller said the company hopes to reduce its own fuel costs by investing millions of pounds fitting train engines with a ‘green’ mode to use less fuel when idling at stations.
