Opinion: Small but mighty

Have your say

All too often it’s the big companies that grab the headlines – today our supplement celebrating the Top 100 small and medium-sized companies puts that right.

With SMEs making up at least 80 per cent of the 45,000 businesses in Sheffield City Region, their vital importance cannot be overstated.

From glass recycling to cruises and from halal poultry to precision engineering components the breadth of activity is breathtaking.

If they are doing well, the region is doing well.

So it is pleasing to see that pre-tax profits have risen by 14 per cent in the last year.

Employee numbers have grown by just one per cent but experts predict that will rise when those profits are re-invested.

Hopefully, all the other SMEs that didn’t make it into our table will be in a similar positive situation.

But the elite Top 100 can also be viewed as best placed to hit the big time.

Bosses leading the Local Enterprise Partnership, which sets the region’s business strategy, will be reading the figures with interest.

Next year’s figures will be a crucial sign of whether they are on the right track. Resting on our laurels is simply not an option.
