A BUSINESS that started out in a Sheffield bedroom has been named the fastest growing UK office supplies company for the second year running after notching up record sales, totalling £8 million.
Universal Office Products (UOP) was launched 10 years ago by Steve Manley and Mark Broadbent, with one computer and a desk in the spare room of Steve’s parents’ home in Worrall.
The company rapidly outgrew its temporary base and now employs 19 staff, selling 22,000 products, ranging from stationery to business machines, in addition to operating an office interiors contracting business from its headquarters in Trippet Lane.
UOP secured its fastest growing office supplies company title from leading business products wholesaler VOW.
“Despite tough economic times we have continued to develop year on year and our turnover has grown from £2.6 million in 2010 to £4.4 million in 2011 and £8 million this year,” says Steve, a former Loxley College pupil.
UOP puts its success down to creating and maintaining strong relationships with its clients by giving each client a dedicated accounts manager and helpdesk contact and by delivering a chocolate bar to all its customers every Friday.
The company is now planning to build on its success through new collaborations with Amazon and Play.com.
Sheffield-based design studio ‘93ft’ has been named a finalist in the Interior Design Practice of the Year category of the Northern Design Awards.
The company, based at the Chimney House, Kelham Island, works across the UK and in Europe.
