SHEFFIELD’s Off The Shelf book festival - October 13 to November 3 - gets under way with events including a talk by Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Ford, chatting about his new book Canada.

It is a haunting and visionary novel of vast landscapes, complex identities and fragile humanity.

His book questions the fine line between the normal and the extraordinary and the moments, in our lives, that take us into new worlds. It has received brilliant reviews.

Ford was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Described by the Irish Times as “…the voice of twentieth century America,” he has published six novels and four collections of stories including A Multitude of Sins and The Lay of the Land.

Independence Day was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, the first time the same book had won both prizes.

He will talk about his new book and his career at St George’s Church, University of Sheffield, Mappin Street, Saturday, October 13, at 7.30pm.
