South Yorkshire Federation of Small Businesses has raised concern about a £1.8 million loan given to Sheffield Business Park to redevelop the former City Airport site.
The FSB is unhappy about the business park’s major shareholder, Peel Holdings, gaining further public funding, when it managed to obtain the site for free.
A token £1 fee should have been levied on Peel by Sheffield Council to take ownership of the site if the old airport was not viable – but the money was never collected.
Gordon Millward, FSB regional chairman, said: “It seems Sheffield Council is building an unenviable reputation of allying itself to developers who fail to deliver.
He said: “We believe the business community has a right to reassurance that investment in the economy is being directed into areas which meet the needs of taxpayers – to the exclusion of the corporate interests of Peel and others.”
Mr Millward said the loan, from the Sheffield city region local enterprise partnership, should not be paid.
