Ambitious bosses are being urged to pitch up to a contest in Sheffield which aims to find the brightest digital talent in the North.

The ‘Northern Stars’ event, tomorrow Tuesday October 20, will see them pitch to an audience who will vote for the best one.

Sheffield is the fifth of seven cities to host the roadshow, run by Tech North, the Government-backed organisation which aims to support tech and digital businesses in the North of England.

A panel of independent judges will shortlist 20 companies from the winners, and all those who have taken part, and they will be invited to pitch again at a grand final on November 24 in Manchester.

Ten ‘Northern Stars’ will be chosen to pitch to investors at the Bloomberg headquarters in London.

Claire Braithwaite, head of Tech North, said all companies in the initial pitching competition will be offered support and expert advice by the Tech North team.

She added: “Northern Stars is part of the jigsaw puzzle of how we can start to develop our northern digital eco-system. It’s about how we start bringing together and connecting networks of tech founders.”

Dr Sam Chapman, co-founder of Sheffield tracking company, The Floow, will also speak at the event at the Union Street co-working space in Sheffield city centre.

He said: “Tech North’s Northern Stars programme is drawing attention to the growing expertise of digital engineers across the region and providing a connection for start-ups and larger companies across the board. I will be talking about the history of The Floow and how big things can come from small companies. Having started as a team of three in our Sheffield base we now have over 40 staff across the world. “I’ll also give insight into our telematics technology; from how we capture data, to how we use that data to understand driver behaviour and vehicle pollution, and how this ultimately allows us to deliver a service to our customers.”
