NHS cashes in on Powerstar

Energy saving systems specialist EMSc Powerstar has completed a contract to help Mersey Care NHS Trust cut energy consumption at three hospitals and a clinic by almost a fifth.

The Rotherham company, whose Powerstar voltage optimisation technology cuts power used and boosts the life of equipment, has a number of NHS Trusts among its clients.

Thanks to its entirely British made system Ashworth, Mossley and Rathbone Hospitals and the Scott Clinic have cut consumption by 18 per cent on average, achieving savings of just under £7,000 a year at one hospital.

Although modern equipment is designed to work off 220 Volts, power supplies can be as high as 250 Volts and the extra energy supplied is dissipated in the form of heat, reducing the working life of the equipment.

Powerstar voltage optimisation system cuts energy use by controlling the incoming voltage so that it more accurately meets the specifications of equipment on site. The system can also remove harmonics – electrical noise which can cause the current passing through equipment to rise significantly.
