Sixth-formers in Sheffield are urged to get their applications for student loans in early this year - to ensure cash is in their accounts when the term starts.
Applications are already being accepted, with 91,000 expected from Yorkshire alone – but officers say many teenagers leave it to the last minute.
In previous years, some undergraduates have had to wait for the first few weeks of their course for their loans to come through.
Student Finance England says several improvements to the system have been introduced this year.
Checking incomes is the most problematic part of the process, but last year 75 per cent of applications were verified without the need for further evidence.
