Retail opportunities in Rotherham town centre are continuing to grow after two new pop-up shops were created.

The vacant units are based in the Grade II listed Imperial Buildings at the top of the High Street.

They offer retail space for budding entrepreneurs considering starting a new business, with flexible lease terms available for 12 months as well as free and subsidised rent periods.

Rotherham Council’s regeneration arm Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO), which helped to upgrade the units, is also facilitating financial help to fit-out the premises, along with free business advice and training from retail experts.

It is part of the wider pop-up shop scheme, which involves investing in vacant units to make them available for retail opportunities, which is being funded jointly by the Association of British Bookmakers and the Government-backed Portas Pilot Initiative.

Councillor Denise Lelliott, the council’s advisory cabinet member for housing and the local economy, said: “Feedback from this year’s Retailer Awards has highlighted that Rotherham’s range of diverse and vibrant independent stores is proving to be a big hit with shoppers.

“The positive comments from shoppers have revealed that customers really do appreciate what’s on offer in the small independent stores and eateries.

“One shopper stated that Rotherham is at the forefront of independent trading, making it stand out from other town centres.

“This is a great response and the availability of new pop-up shops can only build on this great foundation and boost the Rotherham shopping experience.”
