A project has been launched to look at ways of increasing footfall into Barnsley town centre.
Business owners were asked for their input into the ‘Town Plan’, which aims to boost the number of shoppers visiting town centre outlets.
Fresh Marketing Solutions, on behalf of Enterprising Barnsley, held discussions with 23 of the 24 tenants in the shopping arcade to ask what support they need to boost trade.
Traders recently met with council chiefs to feedback the results and agree a way forward. Issues raised included improving parking provision, increasing marketing and hosting public events.
A team of business champions have now been pulled together to represent the arcade, including staff from 8oz Burger, Debut Records and Kingstone Jewellers.
They will work with the council, the town centre management team and Fresh Marketing to address some of the issues raised and to develop a programme of business support.
Councillor Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: “The pilot will develop support that could ultimately be rolled out to other independent retailers over time if there are areas that are particularly successful.”
