New jobs as shop opens in centre

UP to 50 jobs are to be created as a new TK Maxx store becomes the latest retailer to open in Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre.

The discount designer store is set to be launched this year alongside other brands including Urban Outfitters – with centre bosses saying more openings are expected.

Darren Pearce, Meadowhall’s centre director, said: “This is a fantastic brand to add to our already comprehensive fashion offering and there is real excitement building. We’ve already announced a number of key new brands for 2012 including Urban Outfitters, and we will be continuing to add to our portfolio with new store openings throughout the year.”

A TK Maxx spokesman said they were ‘very excited’ at the opening.

The news came as property firm British Land, which co owns Meadowhall, said occupancy rates and footfall at its retail estates continued to improve.

It said the number of people visiting its sites rose by three per cent compared to a 1.1 per cent decline across the retail sector as a whole.

But the amount of British Land retail tenants in administration in January also grew as big retailers including Peacocks collapsed.

A report from the Local Data Company also showed up to a third of shops in some high streets, particularly in the north of England, are empty as people shop online or out of town.
