SPORTS bar Champs is on the move.
The venue on Ecclesall Road is being revamped as a real ale bar and restaurant and will have a new name.
Meanwhile, pub company Punch Taverns has bought the name and plans to convert The Ecclesall, formerly known as The Pomona, into a new Champs bar.
The move follows BrewKitchen’s takeover of the lease at the current Champs bar, which led to the name and theme being sold.
Simon Webster, chief executive of BrewKitchen, a joint venture between Richard Smith restaurants and Thornbridge Brewery, said: “We felt that a fresh start was the best approach and we have some really exciting plans in the pipeline to incorporate both a bar and restaurant into the building.”
Brew Kitchen said the new name for the venue has not yet been decided.
Punch Taverns are making an application to Sheffield Council’s licensing board to make changes to The Ecclesall at a meeting on Tuesday.
As well as the name change to Champs, the plans include remodelling the car park to extend the outdoor drinking area, new doors to the front of the premises, and internal alterations.
Hours will remain the same as at present, closing at 1am Sundays to Wednesdays, 2am on Thursdays and 3.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.
