Ideas for the future of Sheffield’s historic Castlegate area are being sought as part of events based around Urban Design Week.

The area will be open for redevelopment once Castle Market is demolished and planners are keen to make it an attractive gateway to the city centre.

Coun Leigh Bramall, cabinet member for business, skills and development, said: “Sheffield’s historical links and its former castle are legendary and we are incredibly excited to find out more about how much of the original foundations are still intact once the markets have relocated.

“Urban Design Week is not just for architects and developers – it’s a great opportunity for residents, college and university students and community groups to get involved in discussing how we can reinvigorate areas such as Castlegate and give them the bright future they deserve and to help restore their historical significance once again.”

The Castlegate Quarter Design Charrette – an intensive planning session where designers, developers and members of the public can come together to make suggestions – will take place at North Bank this Friday between 1pm and 5pm.
