Localphone.com, the Sheffield based internet telephony firm launched by serial entrepreneur Paul Cusack, has been named winner of the Best Consumer VoIP provider at the Internet Telephony Services Providers’ Association Awards.

Paradise Street-based Localphone beat telecoms giant BT to the title.

Paul Cusak said: “I am extremely proud of this achievement and recognition.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without the help from all the Localphone employees who have worked so hard to make our service world class, so I’d like to offer my personal appreciation to them.

“We have lots of exciting plans and product development scheduled in for 2013 and we look forward to announcing these to the public in the coming months.”

Localphone has grown rapidly since it was founded by Mr Cusak, whose previous businesses include mail order computer components business Choice Peripherals, internet service provider Plusnet and electronic retailer Ebuyer.

The company lays claim to being one of the world’s leading providers of cheap international calls and texts, with 10 million users and charges up to 88 per cent below some of its competitors.

Paul Cusak got the idea for Localphone while he was running Ebuyer, travelling extensively and racking up huge telephone bills.

Localphone operates a ‘pay as you go service’ with customers managing their accounts online and making calls straight from their mobile phone, landline or computer without the need to buy extra SIM or calling cards.

The company recently added the ability for customers to make WiFi calls using free iPhone and Android apps, which means customers can avoid paying roaming charges when calling from abroad.

The service also allows users located in countries where there are no access numbers to use the service and make international calls easily.

Paul Cusak was born in Rotherham and sowed the seeds for his first business, mail order computer components business Choice Peripherals, which went on to spawn Sheffield-based internet service provider Plusnet.
