Go-ahead entrepreneur Daniel Fairburn has made the trip from Leeds to Doncaster, via Vietnam, to launch his own online furniture business.

Daniel is the brains behind Out & Out Original – www.outandoutoriginal.com – a furniture company committed to supplying ethically sourced and produced furniture, based at the Sky Business Park, next to Robin Hood Airport.

His roundabout journey to Doncaster started after graduating in Business Studies and Marketing, when he decided he wanted to broaden his knowledge and see the world.

Daniel quit his post-graduation job and started looking for opportunities, clinching a job in Vietnam with Danish garden furniture giant ScanCom.

After rising through the ranks from marketing assistant to become ScanCom’s head of product development, Daniel decided he was ready to go into business on his own.

He chose Doncaster because of its proximity to major motorways, with train links to London and Leeds and Robin Hood Airport, right next door.

Daniel says: “The experience I gained in Vietnam in production and product development was invaluable. I wanted to start my own business and use that knowledge and those contacts to bring unique and designer furniture to the UK at the best value for money for the UK consumer.”

Despite his experience, setting up his new business wasn’t without its challenges.

Daniel approached four banks with his business plan and, after one refused point blank to meet him, Daniel was surprised that NatWest relationship manager Craig Emmerson was willing to take the time to visit him at home to discuss his business aspirations and needs.

“The team at NatWest took the time to read my business plan and were constructive in their feedback. I felt that they had confidence in my ability to run a successful business.” says Daniel.

Craig Emmerson worked with NatWest director of business banking Chris Rushworth to provide Daniel with a £50,000 loan under the Government’s Funding for Lending scheme.

The loan gave Daniel enough working capital to buy stock and launch a marketing drive to establish Out & Out Original, which is committed to supplying ethically sourced and produced furniture and keen to support young designers who are finding it increasingly difficult to fund the production of their designs

With NatWest’s help, Daniel is planning to launch pop-up shops at exhibitions such as Design Junction, held during London Design Week.
